Collector notes

Visiting a coin shop

A few notes before you walk into Village Coin and Metals in MA. These rotate daily. They are general collector etiquette from CDXList — not this shop’s house rules. When something is unclear, ask the person at the counter.

  1. No magnets, acids, or scratch tests on the pad

The shop has the tools if a test is needed. Do not perform experiments on the glass. You can damage the coin and the counter. If you think something is fake, say why and let them look.

  2. You do not have to announce what you paid

“I have three thousand in this” is not a grade or a melt value. It puts the dealer on defense and does not change what the coin is. Tell them what it is, where it came from if that matters, and what you want to do. Let the piece speak, then talk numbers.

  3. If you set a time, be on it

Some shops work by appointment on bigger lots. Be on time. Call if you are late or cannot come. The slot they held is time they did not give someone else. Reliability gets you invited back.

  4. Bullion and collector coins are different conversations

Melt moves with the market. A key date does not. Say what you think you have, then let them look. Mixing “it’s old so it must be rare” with a junk-silver bag slows everyone down. Sort in your mind: weight versus date.

  5. What happens at the counter is private

Do not repeat another customer’s name, address, or what they sold. Do not film the register. Shops are small towns. Discretion is part of being a decent visitor. It is also how you get treated like one.
