Collector notes

Visiting a coin shop

A few notes before you walk into The Gold Deposit in Fredericksburg, VA. These rotate daily. They are general collector etiquette from CDXList — not this shop’s house rules. When something is unclear, ask the person at the counter.

  1. Never step behind the counter

That side of the glass is staff only — even if you “just want to show them something in better light.” Hand the coins across. Wait to be invited if they have a viewing area. Crossing the rail uninvited is how visits end early.

  2. Do not crack a graded holder in the shop

PCGS, NGC, ANACS, and CAC holders are part of the product. Opening one at the counter to “see it better” can wreck the value. If you want it out, that is a decision you make at home, not a demonstration.

  3. They do not have to buy what you brought

A shop can pass on tokens, damaged coins, or a category they do not handle. “We don’t buy that” is information. Ask who might. Do not argue them into a box they cannot use. A clean no today keeps the door open next time.

  4. Cash is still common. That is normal.

Coin and bullion shops have worked in cash for a long time. It is not shady by itself. Count together at the counter. Do not count a stack in the parking lot with the door open. If you are uncomfortable carrying cash, say so and ask what else they can do.

  5. Bring coins in a way they can actually look at them

Trays, albums, and labeled bags beat a torn grocery sack. Do not pour coins onto glass. Hand them a box they can work through. Dirt, food, and loose batteries in the same tin make a poor first impression and a slower look.
