Collector notes

Visiting a coin shop

A few notes before you walk into Red Dirt Gun & Pawn #3 in Chickasha, OK. These rotate daily. They are general collector etiquette from CDXList — not this shop’s house rules. When something is unclear, ask the person at the counter.

  1. Do not ask them to come out to the car

Bring the coins inside. A dealer should not leave the store to look at a trunk. It is a safety issue for them and for you. If the lot is heavy, make two trips or ask if they have a cart. The work happens at the counter.

  2. Bring identification on a larger visit

A license in the car does not help at the counter. If you might sell, buy something expensive, or move cash, bring ID in with you. It speeds things up and avoids an awkward pause after you already agreed.

  3. Regulars get easier visits because they are known

Introduce yourself. Come back. Pay as you said you would. The second visit is almost always smoother than the first. A local shop is a relationship, not a vending machine. That works in your favor when you have something unusual.

  4. Do not assume every shop takes a credit card

Many do. Some do not. Some take cards on retail and prefer another method when they are buying from you. None of that is a trick. Ask, “Do you take cards?” before you empty your wallet. If they say no, that is an answer, not a negotiation.

  5. Give the counter some room

Lean on the glass, hover over an open box, or park six relatives at the rail and nobody can work. Leave space for the dealer to move trays, use a loop, and talk privately. Extra people can wait in the shop or the car unless they are needed to decide.
