Collector notes

Visiting a coin shop

A few notes before you walk into Diamond R Jewelry in Hays, KS. These rotate daily. They are general collector etiquette from CDXList — not this shop’s house rules. When something is unclear, ask the person at the counter.

  1. If you are getting another offer, say so up front

On a large lot it is fair to hear more than one shop. Tell them. A good dealer would rather know than spend an hour and find out you were only using them for a number. Do not treat a courtesy look as free inventory research for the next counter the same afternoon.

  2. Bring coins in a way they can actually look at them

Trays, albums, and labeled bags beat a torn grocery sack. Do not pour coins onto glass. Hand them a box they can work through. Dirt, food, and loose batteries in the same tin make a poor first impression and a slower look.

  3. Do not assume every shop takes a credit card

Many do. Some do not. Some take cards on retail and prefer another method when they are buying from you. None of that is a trick. Ask, “Do you take cards?” before you empty your wallet. If they say no, that is an answer, not a negotiation.

  4. Ask before you touch anything in the case

The dealer will hand you a coin or put it on a pad. Do not reach into a tray or slide a slab toward yourself. Handle coins by the edges if they are raw. If you drop something, say so immediately.

  5. They may weigh, look up, or photograph

That is how a careful shop works. It is not stalling. Stay with your coins. If they need a minute in the back, that is their process. Ask if you are unsure what is happening. Curiosity is fine. Suspicion as a default is not.
