Collector notes

Visiting a coin shop

A few notes before you walk into Dana Point Gold and Coin in Dana Point, CA. These rotate daily. They are general collector etiquette from CDXList — not this shop’s house rules. When something is unclear, ask the person at the counter.

  1. Ask before you photograph coins or people

A picture of a piece in the case is often fine. A picture of another customer, an open buy, or the register is not. Ask first. Many shops are happy to let you shoot a coin you are considering. They are not a film set.

  2. This is a working shop, not a museum desk

They will talk coins. They will not give a free seminar on forty pieces while a line forms. Pick your best questions. Buy a book if you want to learn the series. A dealer who teaches a little is being generous with the clock.

  3. Do not crack a graded holder in the shop

PCGS, NGC, ANACS, and CAC holders are part of the product. Opening one at the counter to “see it better” can wreck the value. If you want it out, that is a decision you make at home, not a demonstration.

  4. Do not ask them to come out to the car

Bring the coins inside. A dealer should not leave the store to look at a trunk. It is a safety issue for them and for you. If the lot is heavy, make two trips or ask if they have a cart. The work happens at the counter.

  5. Online asking prices are not what a shop pays

A listing, a completed auction before fees, and a dealer buy price are three different numbers. Screenshots of asks are not a bid. Bring the coins. Let them look. Then talk. You will get further than arguing from a tab on your phone.
